Women of Means

£375 up to 6 guests

The 1920s in London was the time of ‘the bright young things’ who came of age following the First World War. They loved parties, cocktails, cabaret and their sexual adventures outraged convention. This walk tells the stories of a handful of stylish young women who lived openly as lesbians during this time. Their influence on the UK’s lesbian culture has been long lasting but their wealth and social standing was an essential part of this. Hear about the foot high aristocrat in handmade Italian shoes, the doomed love affair of a little princess and a woman called John.

Shaping the imagination

£375 up to 6 guests

Chelsea is charming. Known for its tolerant, bohemian atmosphere, this riverside London village has been home, over the years, to many lesbian writers, artists and entertainers as well as the world-famous Gateways night club. During this walk we’ll head from Chelsea towards its well-to-do neighbour Kensington. En route we’ll consider the life of the woman who invented the world’s most famous nanny, we’ll visit the birthplace of one of our most celebrated feminist writers and hear about the lesbian writer whose novel became the subject of an obscenity trial.

The People’s Republic of Islington

£375 up to 6 guests

Pioneering and diverse, the London Borough of Islington has long been the haunt of radicals. It also has a very proud and exciting LGBTQ history. As the district that housed Holloway women’s prison for over 100 years Islington has many stories of lesbian dissent, from the militant suffragettes whose ‘votes for women’ campaign landed them in prison to the activists who risked custody for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. We’ll also hear about the UK’s first openly lesbian Member of Parliament and about the many innovations made by Islington on behalf of its LGBTQ residents.
